Society gives us a set of unspoken rules and regulations that must be abided by or else society becomes ones own worst enemy; thus is Eliots message in his poem, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. This poem has been given a cynical voice in which Eliot tries to convey his message of modern society and its expectations. He is in a position in which he knows what the flaws in society are but does not have the courage or the ability to convey the message to the rest of the people. He fears what they might say and how they will treat him, will ruin him if he exploits society. Eliot gives evidence of the mockery society exhibits in line 41: They will say: `How his hair is growing thin!(775) He knows that there are certain things†¦show more content†¦This establishes the theme and thus the tone of the poem. Towards the end of the poem the reader gains a sense of irony and sarcasm that is expressed within the tone: Till human voices wake us, and we drown (778). Human voices is su pposed to represent a helping hand in which any person in trouble can be helped by humanity. However, these human voices only cause the person in need to drown in their words. This is ironic because, as indicated above, humanity is the coexistence of a fellow human with the help (if necessary and available) of another fellow human when he/she is in need of it. However, metaphorically speaking, the person in need in the poem (Alfred) only receives negativity and hostility from society and his fellow men, thus causing him/her to drown in the words of the human voices. This is the most important set back of society conveyed by Eliot in his poem. It is the last line in the poem and is the key to the poem. Also, Eliot uses other text such as that, which is in the lines, But though I have wept and fasted, wept and prayed, Though I have seen my head (grown slightly bald) brought in upon a platter, I am no prophet- and heres no great matter (777); as an allusion to indicate his inability to convey his message. For Sharon Ezeldin, that excitement wore off after one month; she sits in her office, surfing the Internet for a new job, every day. My job is ok, said Sharon, the 28-year-old, college graduate from Virginia Commonwealth University. Its not that I hate my job, its just not what I want to keep doing. Prior to landing her current position at a well-known modeling agency, she had been unemployed for more than six months. Her search ended when she found the marketing assistant position listed in the Washington Post. Sharon scoured the newspapers and popular job-hunting sites online, as well as going to local temporary job placement agencies. The one resource she did not visit, to save her from weeks of anguish, was the Virginia Employment Commission. Most people rely on the services of the VEC to claim unemployment benefits, if they have lost their job. In the past few years, the VEC has been underestimated as one of the foremost employment resources at hand. Now, the Commission is sought out as the first place to go to when searching for a career. Nancy Dean, manager of the Alexandria VEC said, We are the Employment Commission, not the Unemployment Commission. She explained that the unemployment rate for the Commonwealth of Virginia is at 3.0 percent, whereas the overall rate for the entire United States is at 5.0 percent. Dean added that the unemployment rate in Alexandria, Arlington and Fairfax County are between 1.2 percent and 1. 6 percent. According to Dean, thats a very low rate. Nancy Dean explained that the reason for such outstanding numbers in the Northern Virginia location is because this is one of the most highly educated parts of the country. Unfortunately, even the most educated people can lose their jobs. According to Dean, the primary reason for unemployment in the Alexandria location would be due to the loss of employment contracts. For those workers who lose their contracts, they would be eligible to receive unemployment benefits. To be eligible for unemployment benefits, you must have lost the job to no fault of your own, said Dean. At this time of year, most unemployment is due to the loss of seasonal jobs, such as landscaping, construction and tourism, but according to Dean, the unemployment rate in those sectors will decrease towards the spring. Carl Floyd is a Work Service Representative on rotation, at the front desk. He believes that within the last six months, there has been more of a decrease. However, he has noticed that most of the professionals that come in to claim unemployment or search for a new job are workers that are over 40 and have been laid off. This is difficult because each year the students are expected to do better than last year. This puts a great deal of pressure on them. Their parents also put a large amount of pressure on their children purely because they expect so much from them. Teenagers can also get stressed or feel a lot of pressure from their friends. I think that this usually is things like sport labels, clothes and sometimes the opposite sex. The end result of this is most likely teasing or bulling. Some teenagers bring stress on themselves if they are to shy to talk to the opposite sex for whatever reason or if they do talk to them and they do or say something idiotic. The custom of arranged marriages are still used today in some societies. The Muslims are the main community that still carries this act out. This would affect girls more because they dont get any say in who they marry. I think that the parents will try finding as near perfect match as they can, but nothing is perfect. I dont think that he is a very believable character but when he re-enters later in the play (act 2: Scene 1) he becomes a very powerful and strong willed character. The Capulets are equally concerned for the welfare of their daughter, Juliet. Capulet, Juliets father, wants her to marry Count Paris. Paris is a nobleman and loyal kinsman to the Prince. He is an eligible bachelor. Juliet is a good daughter and doesnt want to upset or disappoint her father. Juliet is shocked, at first, I think because she is so young and the idea of marriage never crossed her mind. Bu she says to her mother, Lady Capulet, that she will marry him if that is what she wants. It is an honour that I dream not of. Romeo and Juliet were willing to risk everything even their lives to be with one another. I think that this show s a lot of courage and strength of the youth. As so often the adults only learn the lesson at the end when it is too late. I think that Friar Lawrence is a very wise man and he has good motives. The only reason he married the young adults is so that it might stop the feuds between the Montagues and the Capulets. At the end of the play the families realize the distraught which they have brought upon themselves.
